Skies are mostly clear early on this New Year’s Eve and temperatures are about 15 degrees cooler than this time yesterday but still well above normal with readings ranging from 38 in Clifton down to 26 at Walpack. Winds are calm or light southwesterly. The air quality is good with an index of 24.

Weak high pressure will give us a sunny day today with mild temperatures and light winds. A low pressure system will give us rain tonight possibly heavy at times with a chance of a rare winter thunderstorm. Rainfall amounts will be between 3/4 to 1 inch.

New Year’s Day will be cloudy with still a chance of a shower, it will become breezy. High temperatures near 50 in the morning will drop to the low 40s by sunset. Skies will clear at night.

Thursday will be colder despite plenty of sunshine, some wind gusts past 30 mph possible.

High pressure will then dominate our weather Friday through the weekend with cold temperatures and it will remain dry.

There will be a possibility for snow on Monday but some computer models keep us dry with others indicate a mainly light snowfall.

A cold front will be moving though our area this morning followed by a brisk westerly flow of air. Temperatures will remain mild with highs in the upper 50s to around 60. Skies will be mostly cloudy this morning with clearing by noon.

A weak high pressure will give us dry and mild conditions on Tuesday with less wind. A low pressure will be moving into our area at night with rain possibly heavy at times. Not ideal weather for the ball drop at Times Square.

It now appears that New Year’s Day will dry and mild but it will become windy at night.

Dry and colder weather is expected Thursday through the weekend. Gusty winds Thursday and Friday with somewhat less wind on the weekend.

A warm front will pass through our area this morning preceded by fog and drizzle this morning and followed by a brisk southerly flow of much milder air with high temperatures well up into the 50s. The afternoon should be dry with only a small chance of some peeks of sunshine.

A cold front will cross the area around dawn on Monday preceded by very mild air along with showers that may be heavy at times. Clearing Monday afternoon but it will stay mild.

Increasing clouds on Tuesday with rain developing at night and showers lingering into New Year’s Day. Temperatures will continue to be above normal.

Dry and colder Thursday through the weekend!

Looking even further ahead unlike the last few Januarys it looks like we will remain cold and for the snow lovers there will be a couple of chances of significant snow.

A frontal system moving into our area today with give us cloudy skies with periods of light rain today into tonight.

Rain should end by Monday afternoon as a cold front moves to our east, it will continue to be quite mild

High pressure over our area will give us a mostly sunny day with seasonably cool temperatures and light winds.

The high will move off the coast tonight as a frontal system approaches from the southwest. Skies will become overcast tonight with some freezing rain possible from late tonight into Saturday morning then change to all rain as milder air moves in. The rain will likely continue into Saturday night.

A warm front will move north of us on Sunday and we will have much milder air with highs approaching 60 degrees. There may be a dry period late Sunday morning into the afternoon but then more rain will develop Sunday night and continue through Monday morning.

Dry and mild conditions are expected Monday afternoon through the day on Tuesday but another low pressure will give us rain New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day.

Colder and dry weather is expected for Thursday.
