A cold front will move through our area by sunrise and it will be followed by a strong northwest flow of air. Skies will become mostly sunny with some wind gusts to 35 mph. Winds will diminish by late tonight.

Wednesday should be dry during the day but a low pressure system is expected to move into the area Wednesday night with snow which will mix with sleet and freezing rain Thursday morning before changing to plain rain by noon. Accumulations should be around an inch before the changeover to rain and the Thursday morning commute may be hazardous.

Friday looks to be a mostly sunny day with temperatures a few degrees above normal.

Another disturbance will move into our area on the weekend with again snow that may begin Saturday afternoon changing to a wintery mix at night before changing to rain on Sunday.

An Arctic high pressure centered over northern New York will be moving offshore today. We should see an increase in clouds with a chance of light snow this afternoon as a warm front moves through the area. Snow will become likely this evening with accumulations averaging 1-2 inches.

Monday will be milder with highs reaching near 50 degrees that will help melt much of the snow.

A weak cold front will come through dry Tuesday morning, not too much cold air following the front so the day will still be mild.

A stronger frontal system will affect our area Wednesday afternoon through Thursday. Precipitation will start off as snow possibly as early as Wednesday afternoon, mixing with sleet and freezing rain overnight then changing to all rain with milder temperatures on Thursday.

Friday looks to be a dry day with near seasonable temperatures.

Another system may give us a chance of snow on Saturday.

CLIFTON’S CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY 2025. Records began in 1973.

January’s temperature averaged 29.2 degrees which was slightly below normal. The highest temperature was 51 set on the 29th, the lowest a chilly 4 degrees on the 22nd. Precipitation was only .70″ which made this month the driest January on record. Snowfall was below normal with 5.8″ recorded. The highest amount was 4.3″ on the 19th.

Happy Groundhog Day. My thinking is there will be 6 more weeks of winter but let the rodents make the official forecast.

Low pressure moving off the New England coast in combination with high pressure north of the Great Lakes will give us a brisk northwest flow of colder and drier air today. Temperatures will fall from the upper 30s early this morning to near 30 by sunset. Winds gusting at times above 25 mph will make it feel colder.

The high pressure will be over us Sunday morning and with light winds the early morning temperatures will fall well down into the teens. The daytime highs will be in the 30s with continued light winds. A weak warm front will give us a chance of light snow at night.

Monday will be partly sunny and mild but a cold front will come through in the afternoon.

Tuesday will still be dry with temperatures a little lower than Monday.

A frontal system will give us a good chance of light snow on Wednesday mixing with sleet and freezing rain at night and change to all rain on Thursday along with milder temperatures.

High pressure will then build into our area for Friday giving us a mostly sunny day with seasonably mild temperatures.

A low pressure system will be moving into our area today with periods of rain through this evening, some of the precipitation will start off as freezing rain inland. Temperatures will become milder with highs in the 40s. Rainfall amounts will be between 1/4 to 1/2 inch. So far this month only .48″ of precipitation fell, with the record driest being .75″ set in 1981. It will be close if we set a new record.

High pressure will then briefly nose down from eastern Canada on Saturday giving us a mostly sunny and breezy day with near seasonable temperatures.

We should see an increase in clouds on Sunday as a warm front approaches, the front may be accompanied by some light rain or snow at night.

Mainly dry Monday and Tuesday, Monday will be mild with cooler air for Tuesday.

A stronger low pressure system will give us rain or snow on Wednesday changing to all rain on Thursday with milder temperatures.
